Disc Tear

Who Should Consider Disc Tear Surgery?

A torn disc operation is usually a last resort. Conservative treatment is usually sufficient in providing relief if given enough time. However, if you are among the 10% of patients whose condition has not improved after a few months, a torn disc operation may become an option for you.

What Can I Expect From Disc Tear Surgery?

Torn disc surgery that is performed as a traditional open back procedure where the surgeon cuts open the skin to gain access to the affected area; a lumbar fusion may be recommended to stabilize the spine. This form of torn disc surgery requires large incisions, muscle cutting/tearing, long recovery time, and large amounts of pain medication. In addition, patients experience an increased risk of complications and other side effects.

With our preferred techniques, we, however, are able to offer disc tear surgery that is done endoscopically, meaning we make a small incision to insert special surgical tools. The only incision that is required is considerably smaller than the one you would find in open back surgery. Muscles and surrounding tissue are gently pushed aside instead of being cut or torn. These are the two main reasons patients recover more quickly with endoscopic torn disc surgery.
