What Are the Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?
Common symptoms of a herniated disc include pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness in the extremities. Symptoms will vary in strength depending on how advanced the herniated disc is, and they could be anywhere from mild to severe.
Lumbar Herniated Disc Symptoms
- Pain in the lower back.
- Waves of pain that start in the lower back and run down the leg(s).
- Tingling and numbness in the leg(s), feet, and/or toes.
- Muscular weakness in later stages as nerve damage begins to set in.
Cervical Herniated Disc Symptoms
- Pain in the neck and shoulders.
- Waves of pain that begin in the neck and travel through the shoulder and into the arms.
- Tingling and numbness in the arm(s), hands, and/or fingers.
- Muscular weakness in later stages as nerve damage begins to set in.
You can suffer from this condition without showing any signs of a herniated disc. It is not uncommon for a herniated disc to first be noticed on the x-ray of someone who is not showing any signs of a herniated disc. Symptoms generally do not occur unless the herniation puts pressure on a nearby nerve.
