What Are The Causes of a Bone Spur?
Bone spur formation can be caused by several different factors. First and foremost, bone spur formation may occur naturally over time as we age, which is why bone spurs seem to be so much more common in the elderly than in the younger population. Osteoarthritis, for example, is a common bone spur cause linked to the natural aging process. Many people will not even know they have a bone spur until it starts to apply pressure to the surrounding nerve and muscle structures.
Continual pressure, rubbing, and stress on our vertebrae is one of the most common bone spur causes. Repetitive use is also a primary bone spur cause, which is why proper rest between activities can often help prevent bone spur formation.
Although the continued stress on a vertebra is most often a result of natural wear and tear, it can also be a result of trauma or other degenerative factors; the body’s natural defense to instability is to grow more bone to correct it. But, unfortunately, a bone spur may start to form when too much bone develops and begins putting pressure on surrounding nerves and muscle structures.
How Can I Prevent Spinal Bone Spurs?
Although there is no specific technique to prevent spinal bone spurs, there are lifestyle changes you can make to improve your spinal health and to fight the natural degeneration process of aging. Good posture, for example, will encourage proper alignment and reduce the pressure placed on your spine that may contribute to spinal bone spurs.
Following rules of proper body mechanics will also help to protect your back; lift with your legs while keeping your back straight to reduce the strain placed on your vertebral structure. For more tips for maintaining a healthy spine, see our Prevention Secion.
