Kai-Xuan Liu, MD, PhD, founder and chief endoscopic spine surgeon of Atlantic Spinal Care, New Jersey, has become a visiting professor at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, West China Hospital, located in Sichuan, China. Dr. Nansheng Cheng, Vice President of West China Hospital, announced the hospital’s decision and presented the certificate to Dr. Liu at a ceremony held in West China Hospital on April 18, 2011.
The ceremony was one of the highlights of Dr. Liu’s week-long visit on April 16-24 to West China Hospital in Sichuan, which was ranked the second among the top 10 “Best Hospitals in China” in 2010. On April 18, Dr. Liu was invited to perform 2 percutaneous endoscopic foraminotomy and discectomy procedures to treat 2 highly-challenging spinal conditions involving large disc herniations. The surgery was performed at West China Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, one of the top 10 best orthopaedic departments in China.
After the surgery, Dr. Liu was invited to give a presentation on the history, advancements, and trends of minimally invasive spine surgery. More than 150 spine and orthopaedic surgeons, residents, surgeon assistants, and medical students from West China Hospital, Sichuan University, attended the presentation and participated in the following discussions.
Dr. Liu is a leader in endoscopic spine surgery. He has substantial experience in this rapidly developing field, specializing in treatments for disc herniations, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, failed neck or back surgery, and many other diseases and conditions in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His reputation has attracted patients from all over the United States and other parts of the world.
After earning his medical degree, Dr. Liu received 4 years of resident training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Beijing Medical University, the most prestigious medical school in China. After fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at the Advanced Orthopedics of South Florida, Dr. Liu founded Atlantic Spinal Care in New Jersey, which has rapidly become one of the best surgical centers devoted to endoscopic spine surgery in the nation.
